  • Captain James Cook landed in Botany bay on the 29th of April 1770. Botany Bay is part of the Sutherland Shire and is now the suburb of Kurnell. 
  • Cronulla is blessed with Sydney’s longest stretch of sand and is the only beach in Sydney accessible by train.
  • The Sutherland Shire is home to the Royal National Park. Established in 1879 and it is Australia's first national park and the world's second oldest national park - after Yellowstone in the USA.
  • Approximately 220,000 people live in the Shire, making the Sutherland Shire Council the second largest council in terms of population in NSW.
  • The area also sees approximately 1.1 million visitors each year, particularly in the peak summer season.
