How is 'The Shire' a community
Sutherland Shire is a very diverse urban area. The 220 534 residents of the city are made up of people of many different languages, religions and places of birth. There are also a variety of occupations and living arrangements in which the population has.
Out of the total population, 36 476 people were born overseas. More people migrated from Europe, more specifically the United Kingdom with 9 619 people originally residing from there, than any other continent. Other European countries such as Italy, Greece and Germany appeared on the top ten countries of birth along with Asian and African countries such as China, India, Philippines South Africa and Egypt.
There is a staggering 152 136 difference between the total number of Christians (157 946 people) and non-Christians (5 810 people) within the population. The largest branch of Christianity is the Roman Catholic with 65 216 people, 30.9 per cent of the population. The second largest religion in Sutherland Shire is Anglican with 54 432 people, 25.8 per cent of the population. Other religions on the top ten list were Uniting Church, Greek Orthodox, Presbyterian and reformed, Baptist, not further defined Christians, Buddhism, Pentecostal and Islam. However, these religions are not as popular as the Roman Catholics and the Anglicans as each of those religions has less than 5 per cent of the population.
There are a small percentage of people (12%) who speak a language other than English at home. The language that most of the population is speaking at home (other than English) is Greek with just under 2 per cent speaking it. The other top ten spoken languages are Arabic, Cantonese, Italian, Mandarin, Spanish, Macedonian, German, Russian and Tagalog. Each has less than 1 per cent speaking it at home.
